How to Effectively Build Relationships

How to Effectively Build Relationships

Vera Babayeva | Excelle

I have a meet-up group, where I connect women in an empowering environment to help them with their business ventures. During the June meeting I had Janet Wise talk about how to effectively build relationships in different situations:

Meeting people one on one

When meeting people, be authentic, have something to offer. Do not just talk about your business! Listen and ask questions about their business. This will help you build trust. When you build trust you will become a strong resource and people will remember to turn to you for suggestions, ideas, referrals, etc. This keeps you visible and maintains the relationship.

Attending networking events

When going to a networking event connect with people you do not know. First make sure to wear a name tag on the left side, above your heart. Don’t spend the time talking to friends or just with one person. Approach those who are standing by themselves. They will be glad you did. Approach a group, make eye contact and one of them will welcome you.

After talking to the attendees, end the conversation by exchanging business cards and say something like, “Just like me, I am sure you would to meet more people here.” And move on to the next person. Keep one pocket for your business cards and another for the ones you get. Keep your hands free of food and drinks. This will allow you to exchange business cards with ease.

Following up persistently without pestering

When following up, via phone, e-mail, or in person, offer to share your expertise and listen to what they have to offer. Some may find your business useful today and become your client. Others may not, but they may need your services in the future. And for others they may not be interested but may know someone who is. Never delete people from your mailing list unless they specifically request it.

Follow up persistently by constantly reminding them of your existence. Send e-mails, electronic newsletters, and post cards about your services and accomplishments. Make friendly phone calls. Get to know your clients. Ask how they are doing. Offer to help. Send out useful resources. Don’t just push your business to people. Build trust.

If you have other effective networking tips please share!
