Are you looking for a job, but think you can’t find one because there just aren’t any opportunities out there? Think again. There are a few companies that are still growing and thriving despite, or maybe because of, the economic downturn. Excelle did the research for you and compiled a list of 15 workplaces that aren’t laying people off, and that might hold valuable opportunities for you.
Wal-Mart
Wal-Mart stores, Wal-Mart.com, Sam’s Club, Sam’sClub.com
Wal-Mart employs more than 2 million associates worldwide, including more than 1.4 million in the United States. Wal-Mart is not only one of the largest private employers in the U.S., but the largest in Mexico and one of the largest in Canada as well.
Industry: Retail
Corporate Offices: Bentonville, Arkansas
Other Major Office Branches: More than 4,100 facilities in the United States. Walmart.com’s office are located in Brisbane, CA
How They’ve Handled the Recession: Wal-Mart is a company meant to thrive during a time when people’s wallets are thin. Plus, their brand is well recognized as a store that offers low prices and deep discounts. This brand-recognition brings cash-strapped people flocking to buy from stores all over the country. Additionally, Wal-Mart sites conservative financial and operational practices, such as tight inventory control as contributing to their current success. According to USA Today, "During an analysts’ meeting in October, CEO Lee Scott said that Wal-Mart is doing “extraordinarily well,” and that founder Sam Walton built the company to thrive during downturns…At the analysts’ meeting, even cautious Wal-Mart executives couldn’t resist a little crowing. “How many companies,” said Chief Financial Officer Tom Schoewe, “could stand before you today and say that their balance sheet is stronger today than it was a year ago?”
Working at Wal-mart: The average, full-time hourly wage for Wal-Mart stores is $10.83 and is even higher in urban areas. The average full-time hourly wage is $11.62 in Atlanta, $12.57 in Boston, $11.52 in Chicago, $11.26 in Dallas, $11.49 in San Francisco and $11.48 in New York City. (All metro figures based on MSA). Additionally, associates receive performance-based bonuses.

It's f'ing brutal out there. I'd add a couple things too.
BS a network if you don't have one with google/linkedin/FB...
Do some espionage (anonymous phone calls, whatever it takes) and get a real contact at the company. Skip HR if you can.
Paste a text version of your resume at the bottom of every email to HR so the person doesn't have to open your attachment.
This article has some more unconventional job hunt tactics because with everyone desperate the old "please look at the attached resume" just isn't cutting it.

After just getting laid off, I need to supplement some of my unemployment. So with that I am meeting with someone at K-Mart on Wednesday. Hopefully they will be good to work for part time and offer me a chance to earn a few dollars until a full time position arises.

I know the only reason why they say Wal-mart is hiring from first hand experience. After christmas they let a lot of people go and then they always end up still needing some people. It is not a place I would recommend to work because the pay does not equal the work and you do not get any credit for a job well done. They are now cutting back hours of part-time employees to make up for the economic crisis that we are in. Of course they can say they aren't laying people off if they are just cutting back peoples hours. Oh, and they have just began a cap on wages. It doesn't matter how long you've been there, once you've hit a certain amount that's it, no more $0.40 raises each year.

Oh and I have noticed that this ad is titled wrong. Should say "Wal Mart Hiring" or some such. Where are the other 14 companies?

Thats good. But to be fair, I think they should have a hiring preference for all the retail workers from the small local businesses they drive out of the towns they move into.

I wouldn't apply at Wal Mart myself! They treat their people so unfairly.

Guess what people do when they are out of work? They drink more. Hence the 4.6% increase in sales.

Even in this tough time and being out of work I will not apply at walmart!!!! Their employees have the worse customer service skills. At least at the store I have shopped at. That's pretty sad.

I think the figures they put for average pay for WalMart are completely and totally false. I don't care what area it is, most employees are lucky to get $8 per hour at WalMart. I have a feeling this article was not properly researched.

I have to say I agree about Walmart. I might shop there once in awhile, but I would never, ever consider working for them. A company should in part measure success in the way it cares for its workers. There is nothing worse than treating people like they are expendable. But overall, this is an informative article. Just do your own research as well if you are seriously considering some of these other companies. As for Walmart, if you have other viable job options, take them!
