I have followed ALL the advice given here and even gotten a call for the second interview. I thought I was "in". I was cautiously optimistic but a SECOND interview is reason for hope! I did everything right....researched the company, knew all the important names, smiled appropriately, dressed appropriately, got that "good" feeling after the interview, and sent the "thank you" letters, etc. I was even told there were other "courtesy" interviews and they would be in touch the following week. I waited and waited and waited . . . . . and waited. Finally, a month later I sent a very nice letter asking if the job had been filled and if it had, let me know what I could have done differently to impress. I asked them to let me know so that I would be better prepared on my next interview. A day later, I received the perfunctory response . . . "excellent interview skills, represent yourself well, decision hinged on amount of administrative experience and nothing negative on my part". That was a copout because I had more than the required administrative experience based on their job description. During the interview, several times I noticed the interviewer said the position had always been filled by a man. And guess what . . . a man got the job. But not just any man . . . a gay man. After some research, I found out the position had always been filled by a homosexual man. In my book, that's descrimination against a heterosexual female!

In the past I have noticed the jobs I got called back for or hired for included the interviews where I turned the questions onto them and asked their personal experiences in the role or how they feel about the company and if they think its a good company to work for etc- they either love to talk about the business or they don't; it can really give YOU a clue to the "karma" you would be working in. Also, at the end of the interview on two occassions I shook their hand and smiled asking "when can we talk about a start date"? The two that hired me loved it and I spent at least 2 years at each of those positions and left only due to outside influences in which I could not control- we hated letting go of one another!

People love to talk about themselves. Asking the interviewer questions is a great way to make them feel good and take some of the pressure off yourself having to answer questions!
