Unlike so many of your friends and family, you won’t have to deal with the unemployment office or cancel your cable — yet.
But instead of sitting smugly at your desk, you should be thinking about what you can do (right now!) to make yourself absolutely indispensable.
Having a job is not a civil right. Everyone is vulnerable to cutbacks. Now is not the time for complacency.
The good news is, there are lots of steps you can take to help safeguard your position. And who knows? You may even end up with a promotion!
If you want to be the last person they’d think of letting go, follow our ten tips.

Tip #7 is very important in today's "dog-eat-dog" workplace. However, at my last job, every effort I made to be positive and helpful was viewed by my female "superior" as trying to suck up to the boss. She sabatoged my work and twisted the knife in my back. She was successful in getting me fired. Later I learned that she and the married boss were having a little extracurricular "activity" on the side. Therefore, she viewed me as a threat to be eliminated.

Tip #10 is most important of them all. Your coworkers will notice your changes more than your boss. They might be tipped off by other managers but it better to inform them yourself.

I completely agree with tip #7. The fact that everyone (and no it really isn't me) does not know how to verbally communicate with each other without getting attitudes and repeating themselves at least 5 times is the one and only reason I am looking for another job.

I love tip #10. I think as women we've been dissuaded from "tooting our own horns" because it's generally a trait of powerful men. In men it's its seen as being assertive; in women it's associated with bragging or many other negative traits. But as stated, if we don't do it, then who? We cannot wait for others to notice our hard work and untiring efforts.

Excellent article, even though most of the stuff should be common sense, it's good to be reminded of it.

These are things we should all know, but it definitely doesn't hurt to be reminded of them. I especially liked all the focus on being positive, and actively looking to make a positive contribution, such as saving the company money. Great article!

I really enjoyed this article, I think that #5 is one of the best, as womenn we need to be empowering ourselves. We lead in our homes why not lead at the office too. We so many times think because we do not have a title that we cannot lead but what we fail to remember that people watch us all the time and we can lead by example. Never let a title or lack of a title slow you down.
