10 Ways to Make Yourself Unfireable

Unlike so many of your friends and family, you won’t have to deal with the unemployment office or cancel your cable — yet.
But instead of sitting smugly at your desk, you should be thinking about what you can do (right now!) to make yourself absolutely indispensable.
Having a job is not a civil right. Everyone is vulnerable to cutbacks. Now is not the time for complacency.
The good news is, there are lots of steps you can take to help safeguard your position. And who knows? You may even end up with a promotion!
If you want to be the last person they’d think of letting go, follow our ten tips.

I like the article. However, some things I don't agree with. When your doing your best at a job and you try to stay clear of gossip. Just do your job and talk at your breaks and work and go home. Or just steer clear and just be about work. thats all

As much as I'd like this to be a clear cut subject, it's not. This article sets people's expectations all wrong. If you are the type of person who is mearly trying not to get fired, instead of trying to succeed, then none of these tips will be of use. No amount of working long hours and running yourself into the ground can be a substitute for lack of motivation. I've worked for a Fortune 100 company (260,000+ employees) for over 8 years, and know plenty of people who worked for my company who were laid off even though they satisfied all the metrics outlined in this article. Perhaps it should be retitled "How to get noticed in a medium-small size firm". Working in a large company, it's ONLY about who you know, how many connections you have.

As much as I would like to agree with all of these wonderful tips, my experience has been that some companies find everyone dispensable. Social work is tough because often times the company you work for can be ungrateful, the reward is in helping the client. My experience has been that leadership skills from the lower ladder are not highly looked upon. When I realized that my job took priority over my children, I knew it was time to move on. Currently, working on a Master's degree, to become indispensable or my own boss.

There are some good tips here but I don't think they make you unfireable. I did most all of them at my last job and it didn't help me. When they want to let you go they will find or make up a reason. She wanted to hire one of her friends and I was in her way.

This is so true. My last supervisor spent the entire day on Facebook and communicating with 2 co-workers via Google IM. They don't need to set the example but you must adhere to the rules.

Useful article, in its own right. Sounds almost like "sucking up" though. I understand we need to do our best for our team, but it's hard to stay positive when your best just isn't good enough, (like when your manager's (who never saw your work) evaluation of you is radically worse than your immediate supervisor's (who saw your work daily).
And what do you do when you really do need regular time off for poor health, like a recurring weekly appointment? Many health offices don't stay open past 5pm. Your boss is going to hold it against you no matter what, even though there's supposed to be no discrimination.
Also, in response to smeilstrup's comment, it sure would be nice if there was a list of companies or departments within companies that maintained inhospitable work environments so we'd know to avoid them =0 What's point of going through the trouble of getting hired only to be let go later, possibly with a marred reputation? I've seen a lot of "good ol' boys" politics going on, both in the military and civilian sectors. Corruption in our society is really getting out of hand (sadly).
