Ask the Career Expert: Acing the Group Interview

J.T. O'Donnell | Excelle

Being new to the workforce isn’t easy. Let Excelle help you! We’re delighted to introduce a new weekly column by venerated career expert, J.T. O’Donnell, founder of Careerealism.com.

She’ll be taking member questions each week, on topics ranging from finding your first job, to getting a promotion and managing office politics. Submit your question here.

This week, a community member wants to know how to stand out at a group interview.

Dear J.T.,

I’ve made it past the first couple rounds of interviews and now I’ve been told I’ll have a group interview with the 5 remaining candidates for the managerial position. I don’t know all the details but I’d imagine we’ll be given some tasks/problems to solve and rated on several leadership abilities and communication skills.

I’m terrified! Not of taking the lead but standing out without bogarting or being a bully. How do I make myself shine but still look like a cooperative, team player?

I think I’ll be more stressed about the image I’m projecting than the actual exercises! Any tips?

Thanks, Stephanie S.

Dear Stephanie,

First of all, congratulations and making it through this interview process. I actually love to hear about companies who are this thorough in their hiring efforts. It’s clear the company you are interviewing with wants to make the right hire the first time. A group interview is nothing to fear – it can actually be quite fun and give you a chance to really shine. Companies like doing group interviews because it enables them to compare and contrast candidates in one session. It also lets them preview what it will be like to work with you in a team. So, with that being said, here are my “4As” for acing that group interview!
