How Not to Fail on Your First Day

How Not to Fail on Your First Day

Stephanie Rushford | Pretty Young Professional

Congratulations! Your resume made it to the top of the pile and you survived the interview.

Now that you’re an official employee you must pass the hardest test of all: your first day on the job. Over the years, many young professionals have stumbled on their first day because of fear and anxiety. These problematic behaviors are often caused by belief in shortsighted “myths” that can hinder a novice worker’s professional advancement.

Check out this cheat sheet to some long-held “first day myths” that could use a little reforming.

Myth 1: First Impressions Mean More than Your Work

It’s conventional wisdom that first impressions are important. As a young professional you must arrive to work on time, or even better, get there early. However, if you accidentally spill coffee on the VP of sales, don’t panic! Take stock of your actions. We all make mistakes and falter at some point in our careers. Even the CEO can have an off day.

The most important thing to do after an unfortunate introduction is to understand what mistakes you made and move on (read “Recovering from Mistakes” for tips on how to do exactly that!). Your manager will weight your overall productivity and growth after a few months much more greatly than a first day snafu. Most bosses understand the pressure of starting out in the working world and know that first day mistakes are due to nerves or stress.
