Please forgive my delayed response. I have not been on this site in a while, time really gets away from me these days.

At present, I am making items to sell for the Christmas season. I am really into heirloom sewing at the moment. What I have heard more than anything from my stitchin sisters is, how does one find inspiration? I think we all go with what we are inspired to do at the time, add in some flexibility to change for the market demand and timing, then add in the flexibility to change when either the market changes or your drive and inspiration changes.

When my girls were young, they were in dance and twirling. Well, that became a costume business for me. Lots of moms do not sew. When you are a sewing mom, I dont have to tell you how the moms always need your help. What I do not like to do and will not do again, unless properly begged LOL, is alterations. AWK everyone thinks if you sew you do alterations. Unless that is your gig, dont get stuck in that rut.

You might look at the activities your family is vesting their time in and see if there are contacts you make for people who have a need for a seamstress such as yourself. I made a puppet theater for our childrens group at church out of PVC pipe and tons of fabric. So much fun, things just come along all the time.

I advise most stay at home moms to sew something they want to sew and sell it at your local childrens resale shops. Great places for exposure. I found I do not want to do custom orders although many of my stitchin sisters do quite well with it. And then you can expand to internet web sites. EBAY is good for experience but you really have to be good at the business end to make a profit. However, it is great exposure and if you can turn it into a newsletter business for contacts, that is worth your time investment.

The most important thing is buying your items to make and sell. The price you buy for determines the price you need to sell for so you should price yourself in the market for what the market is currently bearing so that takes research. On both ends, for instance, research Lily Pulitzer and Jack and Jill if you are making kids clothing for sale. Then you have to search the other side for buying your materials. Hard to do in bulk until you know what will sell in bulk.

For instance, I made 120 Rock a Billy Rebel twirl suits for a parade for the little ones to be in the parade with the Tyler Apache Belles. You can imagine by the time I got to number 120, I could put it together in my sleep LOL. But my first one is always the one I work my pattern and materials out on. So that is the expensive one. So if you are in the business of one of a kind originals, you need to get a lot for what you sell and still buy as low as you can to make a profit.

Write me with questions any time. Visit all the boutiques at the www.makeminepink dot come site and see what they are doing. I love that place. There are tons of internet malls where you can join and sell your items as your own store. I suggest this instead of EBAY for a real business, with repeat business and profitability. Remember to stay in contact with all of your customers at least once a month. Repeat customers are so much easier to sell than attracting new customers.

    Blessings and best wishes

    Margo
