The 20 Healthiest Foods for Under $1
Brie Cadman | DivineCaroline

Food prices are climbing, and some might be looking to fast foods and packaged foods for their cheap bites. But low cost doesn’t have to mean low quality. In fact, some of the most inexpensive things you can buy are the best things for you. At the grocery store, getting the most nutrition for the least amount of money means hanging out on the peripheries—near the fruits and veggies, the meat and dairy, and the bulk grains—while avoiding the expensive packaged interior. By doing so, not only will your kitchen be stocked with excellent foods, your wallet won’t be empty.
1. Oats
High in fiber and complex carbohydrates, oats have also been shown to lower cholesterol. And they sure are cheap—a dollar will buy you more than a week’s worth of hearty breakfasts.
Serving suggestions: Sprinkle with nuts and fruit in the morning, make oatmeal cookies for dessert.

this was a good read and most of these things i eat regularly. I have to agree with Jute about the cow's milk, though. It's a big mucus producer for me. thanks Tall Anna for the tofu pie recipe. I'm always looking for ways to incorporate it into my diet and this one is a great raw recipe. i've got to work on the sardines and beets, too.

All items inexpensive, versatile, and dare i say,, each one very tasty. If there is an item not liked? try different ways of preparation. There is a multitude of ways to prepare each of the items and to incorporate into your daily meals. The only item that I would change somewhat.. the low fat milk, I am addicted to full fat milk. 55 years old and I am still not weaned.

Minus the sardines and coffee, I am totally on board with everything else in this list. They are all valuable components of a healthy diet! And while I live in an area with a high cost of living, I still agree that these items can be found for around $1 - you just have to know where to shop.

While all of these are extremely healthy foods, you definitely cannot always find them for under $1. I think the article is inaccurate in this sense, though, extremely accurate in terms of the nutrition information provided for the foods on the list.

Tofu gets such a bad rep sometimes, but it's such a great food to cook with -- and cheap! It soaks up the flavor of any sauce with which you're cooking, and plus, it's packed with protein. Also, you can make a delicious tofu chocolate mousse pie by blending a pack of silken tofu, 12 oz. melted chocolate chips, a splash of vanilla, a bit of powered sugar -- pour into a graham cracker crust and chill! Delish!

Great comments on this article. The main takeaway is fantastic – good food is not expensive! Healthy foods are often very low cost, including whatever is growing in your garden.
