25 Things a Professional Woman Should Never Wear

Kayla Baxter, Anna Hennings, and Alice Handley | Excelle

May 26, 2009

We hate to admit it, because we personally feel that clothes shouldn’t matter. In a perfect world, a person would be judged at their workplace based solely on the caliber of their work. Unfortunately, that’s not how the world works.

How you choose to dress each morning reflects how you feel about your job – that you take your position seriously, that you are ready to work and that you pay attention to detail and know what you expect to encounter that day. You wouldn’t go to a construction site in your favorite four-inch stilletos, right? Of course not, you’d go in a hard hat, because it’s appropriate for the situation. Appearances matter!

We’ve all been there, though. The days you wake up feeling sick, but still have to make it into the office, so you throw on any old thing that’s (kind of) clean. The office where you never see anyone but your hated boss and your frumpy coworkers. The jobs you work from home in your pajamas and no makeup.

Regardless of the excuses, there are some things that professionals should just never wear. Ever.

We’ll show you what these things are, why they’re a terrible wardrobe choice and if you’re guilty of having one in your closet – or (gasp!) in your daily rotation – we’ll give you a much better alternative.

A'hem....About that hat rule! Trust me, that's soon to be changed. Hats are back! You can take them off when you get there, but believe me, they are going to be just fine to wear into the office.

The funny thing is in all reality this should be common sense but....... It is also amazing that there seems to be that one person in the office that believes one or all of these are acceptable.

Very cute. I have had to advise employees about "too much skin" and "inappropriate tees" and was always amazed to find they were actually surprised by what I was telling them! So even though this is done as a fun article, there is a lot of truth in what you are saying.

Can we have an article that has more common fashion faux pas? The only one that is remotely realistic is the sandals...maybe scrunchies. I am not sure where other people work but... Come on. Leather pants?! Are we Britney Spears?

I don't care what the percentages are for people who think it's better for a woman to wear makeup. Unless a man can do the same, it is utterly sexist to say that woman should never go makeupless to the office. My image of this website just sunk down the drain. Way to take us all back to the 50's with the image of a woman always having to look like the perfect image of a woman. Is the next thing you are going to say, that woman should all be 5'7" and weigh 120 lbs? I will say one more thing about makeup: it's not about the number of makeup items you use, it's how you use them. Assuming that great makeup is done with a specific number of items shows an incredible lack of experience.

Those leathers look more like awful imitation leather! You don't even see that look being worn in a Harley Davidson shop and I am a rider so the comment outlaw biker was pretty low, shame on you for painting bikers with no fashion sense, our leathers are chaps, vests, jackets, gloves and the summer bra top...not hooker wear. We wouldnt be caught in that horrible look.

In most working environments Casual Friday has become Casual Everyday. Every time I wear a skirt or dress to work people think I must be going out later. I'm just trying to look professional and put together. People in general have become way to slack in the way that they dress. This is work not a barbeque.
