Be Centered in an Uncentered World

We are certainly in extraordinary times given the current economic downturn, which most of the “experts” are calling one of the most severe recessions in several decades. All around us, we hear sad stories of people losing their jobs, homes, savings and most distressing, their hope for the future. Some of us are living these stories ourselves.
The reality is that the recession has touched all of us in some way, either directly or indirectly through the hardships of friends or family. In a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll, 61% of Americans said the economy is causing stress in their lives; a third said this stress is “serious.”
Even in these stressful times, there are ways to stay centered and move forward. Wendy Palmer, Aikido teacher and author of several books including The Intuitive Body, defines centeredness as a state of being stable, relaxed and generous while under pressure. This is no easy task for most us! There are a few steps, however, that we can take to maintain our center even in the most extraordinary of times:
1. Create a centered environment
While there is little we can do to change world economics, we do have power over what goes on in our own homes. Choose to spend time with optimistic, hopeful people, rather than those who are tend to be negative or cynical. Manage the barrage of news by taking a break from the radio, TV and internet. Determine how much information you really need to stay current. Focus on the things that you find relaxing such music, books, hobbies or playing with your kids.
