What Does Your Hairstyle Say About You?
October 28, 2009
![]() |
Ever since watching Anne of Green Gables as a pre-teen, I’ve craved long, flowing red locks. Unfortunately, I was given dark brown hair that refuses to grow past my chin.
In Reading People: How to Understand People and Predict Their Behavior – Anyplace, Anytime, author Jo-Ellan Dimitrius points out that extremes in hair length, volume, color, or style can provide details about a woman’s personality.
#1: Short Hair →

P.S. For those of you following this thread, the context of all of my remarks have been "Do whatever makes you feel good about yourself!". Short or long, permed or straight, gray or colored ... makes no difference.
We are way past that, aren't we?

@jeannedearc:
What an inappropriate comment regarding my remarks! Your retort that folks should move to Saudia Arabia if they agree with the idea to dress like women (recognizing Bible verses where longer hairstyles are encouraged) shows that you don't know the Bible is Jewish in origin (Old Testament) and Christian (New Testament).
In context with what I had written, I was simply recording that many women LIKE to dress in a feminine style, as encouraged in the Bible. This was passed down to women in the recorded verses to be in a classic, ladylike way, and that includes longer tresses to DISTINGUISH them more readily from their male counterparts and to encourage their femininity. In other words: Be proud of your femininity and in how you were created.
You know, kinda the same themes that Excelle demonstrates. You don't have to look and dress like a man to get things done ... Likewise, if you choose to wear your hair short, that does not mean you are emancipated! Those who wish to wear their hair longer simply like to embrace their femininity (in the traditional dress), whether for themselves, or for the men in their lives who enjoy it as well!
Many men actually complain that the first thing many women do once the chase is over (courtship ends, and marriage begins) is to cut their hair! (Many men prefer it to be longer, and enjoy this display of their wives' femininity).
Viva la difference! (Regardless of age!)
Nor will anyone hold it against you if you choose to wear yours short!
Sheesh!

This is the second time I'm reading this article..and honestly I was wishing this time around it wouldn't hit a nerve but it did! :( 'Dimitrius' OBVIOUSLY didn't know any single moms (like myself)! I have an adorable 2 year old but he came with this unpredictable pains / rewards program that I didn't sign up for but that is a whole another article, between him, home, cooking, bills, cleaning and delivering robust, integrated solutions @ work I barely think my "short hair" is all thanks to my insecurities and vanity! It works for me cause I can go crazy with my thinning sheers in the shower and come out with one less thing to worry about / spend $ on!! LOL. In my humble opinion, maybe what the author is saying might apply to young girls, still in their teens (I hope!), who are experimenting, finding them selves and depend on looks a great deal but for us ..and I feel I can safely (and sanely) speak for all us "career-minded" ladies that we take our selves and our responsibilities more seriously then our hair! When I need to make a statement...I do just that! I don't need a hairstyle to be my advocate.. ;)

Hmmm...I'm hoping that spiffyriki is right and this article was not really meant to be taken seriously! I know many women who switch from long to short, curly to straight, and add color, pieces, etc almost as often as they change their jewelry! I personally have gone from long and relaxed to short, cropped and curly, and now longer and still curly. I am working on an "Angela Davis" quality afro, and loving it! Wonder what the author would have to say about my hair? LOL

Did anyone stop to consider that maybe this article is just for fun? I highly doubt we're meant to take this seriously, but it was nice break in my day to read something fun and full of "fluff."

I do not know what made me laugh harder - this ridiculous, stereotypical article, or that this article alone has had 10,659 views and 45, oops, make that 46 comments!
Although I personally do not agree with this view point or suggestion or claim, or whatever; I have been very entertained by all of the intelligent comments and discussion here.
By the way, I have shoulder length, brown hair. After years of actually keeping my hair short, I finally got tired of it and just let is grow and stopped fussing and wasting money. I use an inexpensive organic shampoo, spray in conditioner, throw it up in a clip and call it good. It is neat, clean and appropriate, in my eyes, for work.
I have not been to a salon in almost four years, and my hair has never been more full of body, shine, silky softness, since I stopped spending money on it.
What personality is that? I need an expert opinion! Just kidding!!! Hilarious!!

Wow! Nothing like making a college educated woman stare, slack-jawed at the computer screen in utter shock. If this sight continues to publish rubbish like this it may as well change the tag line to Excelle: Networking for the ignorant-minded sauerkraut.

Despite the attention catching title, this article is an example of the stuff that I saw in preteen mags of my youth. I remember one title in particular that grabbed my attention dealt with applying mascara, and the eye you begin with says alot about your personality. We are human sponges when we can grasp anything related to self discovery. It is human nature and very normal to want to know more about ourselves. Anyway, I began to read the article, and suddenly remembered that when I initially began to use my magic mascara wand to transform myself from a girl to a woman, I did begin with my right eye . . . being right handed, you know. Then when I went to my left eye to apply the makeup, I blinked and ended up with mascara on my hand. After that, I always started with the left eye first . . . so unfortunately, the mag article could not give me any insight to who I was, and why I did the things I did!
This article reminded me of something I heard about in my college history class long ago. Extispicy was practiced in ancient Mesopotamia, and is the practice of using anomalies in animal entrails to predict or divine future events. The king would have a subject cut open a small animal, and predict the future by studying it's "innards."
Hands down, I would categorize this article as "fluff or filler." Too bad for Excelle that the majority of the readers realized this, and demand a higher standard be adhered to.
Now, if you will excuse me, I have a "possum" to catch . . .

Funny because when I wash my hair it is curly and a bit shorter. It is naturally curly. When I straighten it though most people can't believe its my hair because it is so much longer, because my curls are tight.
So am I multiple personality ?? Since I have short then long . . . . .oh no ! hahaha

Interesting. I cut my long hair at age 40 after walking home one day and a car pulled up to offer me a lift - and on seeing I wasn't as young as he obviously thought, shot off like a rocket.
Until them I had never given hair a thought.... It is now short and grey and I feel great.

What may be considered a good trait for one person may not be considered as such to another person. As a woman of color, this is an especially sensitive topic! I just don't think it's as easy as saying "Someone with ____ hair will always be seen as a ____ person". There are so many other factors to consider, including the very simple fact that we all view things differently.
And on a technical note: All of these styles are labeled as "#1"!

I am ROFL. The article reminds me of Desperate Housewives and how we judge each other. I agree with the masses here, pretty lame article, maybe touched a few buttons for us. But, the comments are the best part of the posting.
There is sometimes a hint of truth to some people’s hairstyles and what it says about them—but never 100% accurate. People who select juries might use such generalizations because it MIGHT help save their client’s life. But they take other things into consideration in their judgment of whom to select. It would be sad if they are using such judgments for those looking for jobs. Very sad indeed.
Yeah but….if so, maybe I can start a wig industry based on this and women can come to me before the interview and rent out the right style to land the job. Then after they land the job then can rip off the wig and start singing....
So I put my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why
He said you look like a fine outstanding young man, I think you'll do
So I took off my hat, I said "Imagine that, huh, me working for you!"
Signs, signs, everywhere there's signs
Blockin' up the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign
Yes I am not young. Have short gray hair partly because I hate helmet hair and I like to rock climb; hate to spend money on chemicals that might thin my hair. Besides, I have a sluggish thyroid so my hair hardly grows, so they are wrong about it costing a lot and many trips to the stylist for all.
You have to laugh about these things. I mean I know I’d freak out some interviewer if I came in with this face and body and had my hair glued up and colored green or something. Although, it does sound like a lot of fun.

Believe me Bethanie, women with gray hair have far too much wisdom and intellect to write an article of this type. Baby Boomers are too bright for this one! Remember, we were the trailblazers of the women's rights era.
