The New Gender Gap
Source: The New York Times
October 28, 2009
While the rise in the percentage of females in the workforce appears to signal a narrowing gender gap, this demographic shift more accurately reflects a decline in male employment prospects, rather than true progress for women. 78% of all jobs eliminated in the recession were held by men. Women, on the other hand, were spared from the corporate cost cutting ax, primarily because they tend to be employed in lower paying professions and get paid less than their male counterparts in higher paying professions.
