5 Excuses that Are Holding You Back

January 06, 2009

1. Cooking

I can name five women off the top of my head who have told me they wished they cooked more. For health reasons and for the general fun of it.

Top Excuse: “I’ll never be as good as Rachel Ray” or “It’s too hard.”

Excuse Buster: Not only are there thousands of “fail proof” recipes out there, but the more you cook, the better you get. Try and try again. Just make sure you cook for really trusted friends at first who will laugh with you when you burn your first lasagna.

Excuse #2: “I’m just bad at keeping in touch”

Number 2 is a pet peeve. My husband gets in these shame spirals around not keeping up-to-date with communication with family and friends. All of these things just seem like commitments you have to make to yourself, and then start acting on.

@songwriter, of course not everyone makes these exact excuses. But for those of us who do, this article offers a nice reminder of why we shouldn't and how we can get past our own mental hurdles!

Not everyone makes these excuses! This is a bit too generalized ...

...Volunteering is not the same thing as caring... caring is something you can do on a daily basis, and to me, that is much more important...

...and cooking is something every person needs be able to do for themselves, but the way to start does not need to involve other people eating the food you make... it is better for you to FIRST experiment with cooking foods by yourself (perhaps after being inspired to do so by seeing someone else cook something similar to it or by eating that food and wanting to make it for yourself, or even out of curiosity)... you can show off your cooking skills once you are confident with the results of your cooking... also, cooking does not require an oven or too many ingredients. just get some olive oil and veggies in a pan on the stove and there you go.

as for keeping in touch, well isn't that what social networking sites are for? and creativity is not exactly necessary, but if you are a creative person, your creativity will come out whether you want it to or not....

Lastly, for working out, you don't even have to step outside your bedroom to do that... a fifteen minute workout at home is all you need... i know here where i live the weather is not too great so people make that an excuse not to work out, but you don't need to go outside to workout... plus, at home no one will be looking at you so you can work out in whatever strange outfit you want to wear :)

I think a lot of these excuses stem from people making things much more complicated than they actually are.

Excuse #1 is one I have to deal with. Just a few months ago, I decided to face my fear of cooking, and just went ahead and cooked something I made smothered chicken for the first time since I left Miami. It turned out pretty good (the first time I put a little too much pepper on the chicken, and the second time I burned the gravy and had to make a new batch). The more you practice, the better you get. (And it doesn't hurt to have a family member who's a chef so you can get great tips.) I know I'll never cook like my mom/aunts/Rachel Ray/whoever. Just get in the kitchen and cook. The good part is I have some signature dishes that my family loves (ham, pound cake, chili, corn pudding, etc.) And cooking relaxes me when I get stressed.

What's the Scoop?
