How High Heels Damage Women's Bodies
American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons | Excelle

But just because something is bad for women doesn’t mean that women will stop wearing it. High heels are one easy way of fitting a certain aesthetic concept of what a professional woman should look like. But where do we draw the line, with fashion?
The Knee
The altered posture of walking in high heels places excess force on the inside of the knee – a common site of osteoarthritis among women. One study found that knee joint pressure increased by as much as 26 Percent when a woman wears heels.
Calf
Calf muscles contract and adjust to the angle of the high heels. Muscles may shorten and tighten.
Morton’s Neuroma
Heel height and a narrow toebox can create a thickening of tissue around a nerve between the third and fourth toes, which can lead to pain and numbness in the toes.
Posture
High heels push the center of mass in the body forward, taking the hips and spine out of alignment.

I appreciate this article so much. I do not understand why we put our selves thru so much torture, just because men think it looks good. If they were to wear heels for one hour they would never ask their lady to wear heels, EVER. I wish women would stop wearing these things, especially as we age because we lose our balance more often, then we fall, then we break bones. All for what? To impress ?

I agree with the article. I however, have feet that do not allow me to be comforatable in heels. I have flat feet that are wide and do not have arches. I find a pair of Anne Klein penny loafers, Clarks or Bournes to be the best shoes ever. I guess having "Flinstone Feet" are a blessing and a curse. This article is very helpful.

i had been so very fond of high heels in my young days that I twisted my ankles twice very badly. The second time, the doctor advised me to either choose between walking or dancing as i was also practicing traditional Kathak indian dance. I had to stop practising. At first, I was very angry with all around and specially at fate....slowly i learnt to wear only flat shoes and now I am very comfortable with them. More so, that nowadays there is a kind of fashionable flat shoes which are very much in demand and I do not feel that I am missing out now with high heels.

I stopped wearing heels years ago, and I love my clunky, ugly Birkenstocks with aggressive arch support. I wear 42R/11WW and finding shoes that fit at all is problematic. The last time I wore 3" heels, I could hardly walk out of the building after four hours, and I was not standing most of that time. Granted, I'm 57 years old, but I refuse to be in pain for style.

I usually try to alternate between thicker heels, platforms, and flats. I am 30 and I do feel the affects that a high heel can do to the body. As a matter of fact, I just went shopping yesterday (for about 6 hours) in heeled boots. By the time I got home, I was having pain in my ankles and my feet started to swell slightly. Although I am a shoe fanatic, I try to wear heels when I know there will be a shorter amount of time to stand in them. Otherwise, bring on the platforms and flats. (Laughing)

I used to wear heels all the time, and i started to feel the effects. I have not totally given up on heels bcuz it's so sexy, but i have been wearing more flats, they are so pretty now.

I actually find it more comfy to wear at least a 2" heel. But, I also wear the chunkier heels and always wear platforms. Flats actually hurt my feet.

There's got to be a happy medium that won't make me look like the church lady!

It's funny because, for some men, after seeing that pic with the lady's butt/boobs sticking out, they wouldn't care about the fact that it hurts us!! The other lady looks a little frumpy. I think we need to get away from this mentality of trying to look like a model/sexy office lady all the time. However, you CAN look sexy/beautiful/stylish WITHOUT wearing heels!!
DSW has some really cute flats, I also found some simple, very comfortable, but cute black and brown ones at Pay-less. Target also has cute ones & once in awhile Walmart does too.

I can't give up my heels. They just up my mood on those hard work days. But, sometimes a flat heel is just what I need. Good information to know.

Heels are such a fashion style accessory! I can't give up on this!!
Guess I'll have to alternate heels/flats, depending on my mood, because I'll never be able to wear flats all the time!!
Well it's bad for the health, but eating too much is bad too yet I unfortunately do it quite often :S

They are so uncomfortable, but I love wearing them!! You get to have your own unique idenity, depending on the types of heals you choose to wear. They set the mood for me.

This is why I now only wear them on special occasions. I was SO glad when flats went in style and they finally started making them look pretty.

I love my high heels, and don't want to give them up, but this is definitely food for thought!
