10 Things to Consider When Posting on Facebook

10 Things to Consider When Posting on Facebook

I check Facebook often. It’s a great tool. It allows me to reconnect to people I haven’t seen in years, inform a large number of people about something with one quick status note, and keep up with the activities of my friends, my children, my grandchildren and my friends’ grandchildren.

It’s more efficient than Flickr or other similar sites for getting a photo out to all my friends and it is a great way to share good news. Last week I even followed the birth of my great niece as her father posted status reports on Facebook (and her first photo).

Facebook is also helpful for my business. I can post links to my articles and capture all my friends with one post. I have a Facebook business page as well as a website. I post articles, events and news that my clients and friends might appreciate.

But as I read the many status updates people are writing, I can’t help but think there are just some things that don’t belong on Facebook. So here is my list of ten things to consider before posting.

1. Don’t post photos or updates about being on vacation while you are away. It just doesn’t seem wise to be letting everyone know your house is empty. Wait until you return home to post them. (and avoid putting your address in a post as well).

2. Consider the time of your posting. When a post goes up, Facebook will state how many hours ago it was posted. If you are posting during working hours and your coworkers (or your boss) are friends, they may ask why you are on Facebook rather than working.

3. Just as with email, never post while you are upset or emotional. (and the corollary that goes with this: 4. Always reread your updates before posting them.

5. Think twice and then again before bashing someone or putting something that might embarrass others on line. Especially avoid work related bashing.

6. Don’t post that you are job hunting while you are still employed. Odds are a friend is also a coworker.

7. Don’t repost something without reading it thoroughly. You could find the end says something quite different from the beginning.

8. Don’t post your actual birthday. Yes, everyone wishes everyone happy birthday on Facebook but again, why are you putting information out there that enables identity theft?

9. Don’t put anything out there that might enable others to know your passwords, for Facebook or for other sites. While this may seem obvious, I have actually seen posts like this!

10. Don’t post something foolish or risky that you did. Not only might it turn off an employer but it also may have an impact on getting insurance in the future. Yes, insurance companies, potential employers, and countless others checking your references will look you up on Facebook.

It goes without saying that you should frequently review your privacy settings and be careful about accepting invitations to “friend” someone you don’t know. But even with these precautions, people you may not know may find paths into your status updates. Never post something that can backfire.
