While China’s overall rank fell from 63 in 2006, its absolute scores on both economic participation and health increased. Women factory workers are vital to China’s export machine, and the country’s scores on labor-force participation and wage equality for similar work improved. However, China continues to rank very low on the health and survival subindex (124) because of a disproportionate sex ratio at birth that contributes to the “missing women” phenomenon. There have been minute increases on this variable over the past year.
