Germany, like New Zealand and the Philippines, has a woman running the government: Chancellor Angela Merkel (pictured). However, Germany slipped two spots in the 2007 rankings. All three countries have shown improvements in their economic participation ratios, but larger absolute increases in the Philippines and New Zealand put these countries ahead of Germany. Many European countries hold top spots in the Gender Gap Report 2007. Fourteen—the five Nordic countries, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Britain, Netherlands, Latvia, Lithuania, Croatia, and Belgium—hold places among the top 20 positions. Ireland (9) and Spain (10) outperform Britain (11), which previously held ninth place. Their superior performance is driven by increases in economic participation and political empowerment. In Spain, which ranks fifth among the 128 countries covered on political empowerment, women make up 36% of Parliament members, and half of all those in ministerial positions are female.

I wish I could say I'm surprised the U.S. ranks rather low given the fact that we're the richest nation in the world, and the one with the most resources that should allow the gender gap to evaporate...

No surprise that the Scandanavian countries are the leaders here; objectively speaking, their countries have been the most gender-equal for decades now.
