Description:

After 103 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and with four million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel that confirms his place as one of the most important literary writers today. Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love. Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book because it gives the reader insight into a culture that is different than the one they are used to.

Amazing follow-up to his last book, Kite Runner. All around enjoyable read and Hosseini continues to inspire through his lovely writing and story-telling.

This is the second of Khaled Hosseini's books. His focus on the plight of women in a paternalistic, deeply chauvinistic society is riveting. Even before the era of Taliban rule, the book manages to describe the limited role for women in a traditionalist society: shunned for having children out of wedlock, controlled by the men in their lives, married off to instill control and submission. This book is brilliant, and is a window into a beautiful but shattered world.

I read this book during a year of travels and when I had stopped off in Thailand. It was lent to me by a dear friend and I read it within 2 days. I couldnt put it down. The relationship between the 2 women is incredible and the plight of women during the rule of the Taliban in Afghanistan is so poignant in this story. How both women make choices to marry a man based on their 'lack of choice,' is heart-breaking, but their intense relationship and bond with each other grows over time and becomes such a triumph in this wonderful story. This is one of the best books I have read in a long while.
    Enjoy.
    Many blessings
    always

This was truly a heartwrenching story. It brought to light a culture that many are truly ignorant about. It really engaged me throughout the story. I could truly feel the pain and the struggles that both women went through. It was very thought provoking, and a bit outside of my normal genres. I really enjoyed it though.
