Have you started Christmas shopping (for those who celebrate it?) How do you purchase the bulk of your gifts (phone, online, in person at a store, etc.?)

I've bought a few so far - some online and some at the store

HI, Marie!  i am not the do-it-early type when it comes to my own shopping, but to give you the heads' up when your business starts kicking in, there are LOTS of people who really take advantage of it!  I do fully half of my business from on-line sales, and I offer free shipping and free gift wrap, so people are always looking for that "something extra", and take advantage sooner when they see it.  One day, I hope to be the woman who completes all of her shopping by mid-October; until then, I'll be delighted to make everyone else's shopping much easier!

There is nothing I like more than the holidays. Some people hate shopping but i love it. My daughter's shopping is pretty much done. I try to shop a little bit throughout the year. But because I love the hustle and bustle of the holidays I always leave some shopping for the last minute.

Most of my purchases are done on-line (sadly) because I just never have enough time to go myself. Last year I practically bought everything through Amazon. This year I am taking it light...with the new house I don't have the budget I had last year (boo hoo!)

I don't like to shop, but I love to buy great gifts for my family.  I normally start shopping the week after Thanksgivning, unless I see something ahead of time that I know they'll love and not buy for themselves before then.

Usually, I shop online.  Easier than busting my way through a crowded store.  Packages come and I stack in my room - then I take a night or two for nothing but wrapping with my tree lights and holiday music on.

It's different this year, though as the extra money isn't there.  Yet, my kids are grown and do understand.  Any or all of my extra money is making sure I have oil to keep me warm through the winter months!

I was laid off 3 weeks ago, and had bought my first Christmas gift.  Now, I have no idea what I am going to do about Christmas for my kids.  The child support that I get has to go to bills.

I like to shop as early as I can.  I like to look for unique things online, if I know exactly what I am getting I love shopping the malls and stores during the Holiday season.

I am not much of a shopper! However, I am very fortunate to have a husband that will do the majority of it as long as I go with him so he has someone to talk to! Needless to say though that he decides he wants to do all of it in ONE day and usually the second week of December! UGGGGGG

Thank you all for inviting me to take part in your group.  Christmas has become such a stressful time of year with all the commercialism.  All the kids today seem to take it for granted that everything they get for christmas has to cost money.  It is really too bad because some of the most enjoyable christmases as our children were growing up were ones where there was not much or not any money to go out and buy.  The whole idea of Christmas is to let your loved ones know that they are truly loved.  Memories made by doing things like stringing popcorn and cranberries for the tree, making spice oranges and apples to hang on the tree, Singing christmas carols loud enough that the whole neighborhood can hear you and sharing cups of hot cider or hot coco with anyone who wants to visit.  These are memories that children remember for their whole lives.  When the money isn't there it's time to show our children what the true spirit of christmas means:  Giving and sharing what we have with those who are less fortunate than ourselves whether it is time spent with grandparents, or volunteering to deliver food baskets to those who can't afford to make a christmas dinner.  We all need to get involved and share what we can, by getting children involved in the true spirit of christmas giving.

This is true whether you celebrate Christmas, Hannakah, Kwanza, or a holiday of your own private celebration.  We all need to show our children the importance of cultural celebrations.  This is something that is sadly lacking in our society today.

What a wonderful post.  I get so frustrated seeing the commercials now for the holidays.  I remember growing up in the 70's getting clothes for Christmas and maybe a toy or two.  My parents are from Denmark so we would celebrate on Christmas eve.  We had the turkey dinner and rice pudding for dessert.  If you found the almond in the pudding you got an extra present.  After all the dishes were done we got to open our presents.

We always had a fake tree.  Being the youngest I got to help my dad put it together.  Then my sisters and I put on the decorations.  We would have a candle on the table that had numbers down the side, from 1 to 24.  Every night at dinner we light it and burns down to the next number before we could blow it out.

We also had an advent calendar.  My mom would take the leftover halloween candy and put it on the calendar - we never bought the ones from the store.  My mom had cross-stitched it and put on the candy every year.  Every year she would make a ton of Christmas cookies and freeze them so we had them all December.

On Christmas day we would go over to my aunt & uncle's with the rest of the family and spend the day together.  That's what Christmas means to me, it wasn't about the presents, it was about the time you spent you with your family.

I have to agree with College Grandma because our society has forgot what christmas is all about.  For one it is about celberating our heavenly fathers birthday and it is also about giving to others who don't have.  I try to teach my boys how important it is to give more then recieve. and I also tell them the more you give the more you will be blessed.  I also like the old fashion ways, decorating your tree with popcorn and cranberrys and making crafts and baking and giving it out to the one's you love I think that means more then something bought in the stores.  I am not a big shopper anyways.....

We are shopping online more than we have before, due to the convenience.  I used to love to shop in person; I enjoyed the decorations and the music and even some of the jostling with other people.  It seems more personal to go out and look for that item that just spoke someone's name to me.  However, each year for the past three years it has become more difficult for me to find the energy and enthusiasm that I used to have.

We've bought the main "family" gift and a few smaller gifts.  It will probably be a smaller Christmas this year with the loss of my father.  It changed after my parents moved into an apartment a couple of years ago anyway.  They don't have room for a big tree or to store ornaments all year.

Is anyone out there besides me still not in the holiday spirit? We always do our shopping around the second week of December but this year I'm not even looking forward to it. Maybe it is because my kids are getting older, I don't know. My daughter wants to put the tree up this weekend (we never put it up this early) and maybe that will help!

Boy do I sound like scrooge! Sorry guys, don't mean to.

Trust me, I totally feel like Scrooge.  Every year it's hard for us to get into it.  My older sister died 8 days before Christmas and this is the 10th anniversary.  She's buried in Canada so I don't get to visit her much.  My dad also passed away almost 3 years ago.  We usually don't put up decorations early but over the last few years I think we've kinda taken away from our kids and that's not fair to them.  This Friday we are going to start putting up or decorations.  I am cleaning up my office space so we can put the tree in there.  There are doors to the room so we can close it up.  My dogs and cats are too tempted to eat the tinsel and fling the balls off.

I am going to try this year to have Christmas spirit for the sake of my kids. We need to find ways to make the holiday fun again and not just about how much we spend.  Maybe everyone should think of a new tradition that doesn't cost money, or very little of fun things we can do and share it with the group.

Thanks for the info on the store closings, that is very good info to have!

I think gift cards are a little tacky for a present. To me, it seems like you just won't take the time to actually pick out a gift.

Am I wrong?

I think with the economy the way it is right now, they would make great gifts (I love getting gift cards as presents!) - they may not be in the sense that a lot of stores are closing but it also allows you to just give them the amount you would have spent so they can buy something they will definitely use and love.  I hate when family wastes their money on things that I will never use.  Instead of buying me that pedicure set in that really cute bag, why not just give me a giftcard!  hehe

I think that gift cards do make a good gift so that this way the person can get what they want instead of something they don't like or will never use.  However, if you do give a gift card to someone make sure that it is a gift card to a store that they go to or one that can be used at several different stores.  My family woulld always give me gift cards to stores that I never went to so the gift cards ended up never being used .

We have family in other states so a gift card is a good idea for my kids.  That way relatives who want to give but don't know what the kids will like, can still feel like they gave something.  It also helps keep the cost of postage down.  I prefer not to give gift cards unless I don't know the person very well.

I'm about half done my shopping, stuck on what to get a couple of people.  I purchased a small decorated fake tree this year, added a few special ornatments of our own and have it set up already! Usually have a real tree so never have it up this early, it's putting me in the holiday spirit for sure.

I shop online alot because we live 2 hours or more from the big city and I enjoy the ease and convenience.

This year is going to be a little tough since I was laid off my perfect dream job that I had for 7+ years in August.  I have a new job, but had to take $16K cut...how can you cut your house or car payment??

So, here's my Christmas gift giving:   Something cute, but inexpensive for nieces & nephews, socks for Mom, gas card & gift card to the Mall for my son (usable at all stores, so even if some of the stores close, he can still use it elsewhere) & for friends & other family; I have cookies, salsa, peach jam, pear/apple butter & zuchinni bread that I made & will put into little gift bags!

I love the idea of homemade gifts. To me its so much more personal and making them really helps me get into the holiday spirit. I also love to get these kinds of gifts. Christmas is so commercialised (did I misspell that?) I feel homemade gifts are more in the spirit of giving and because it takes time to do, I appreciate them more.

I'm with Lizie and Pam on the homemade gifts. No one takes the time anymore to do these things. To me, they would mean so much more than a store bought gift just knowing all the love that went into making them!

Time to get creative!  I am not able to do much this year either so I picked up some moldable clay and will be making something for each.

If you are Christian, this year will be the year to remind your kids what the meaning of it is and perhaps instead of giving to each other you could volunteer to help the homeless.  Remind your children that they have been blessed in prior years and this year is when they pay it forward by helping someone else.

Just some ideas.

Diana what nice idea. My daughter works with clay and she makes beautiful sculptures with it . And the kids would probably have more fun creating thier gifts. Great way to spend special time with them.  I wish all people would pay it forward, what a more beautiful world it would be.

Wow, Diana!  That's exactly what my girls and I are doing, too...although they still want the skin care and diva mascara on my shelf!  That is such a wonderful, memorable, bonding type of  experience, and, as I always remind them, you cannot feel sorry for yourself, when you put your heart out there to help others.  Things will be cut back, but I think it is high time!  My girlies are in close proximity to a lot of family, and the excess is immense.  We are actually asking that everyone in our family use a bit more restraint - if not to help themselves, to drive home a point with my crew.

We are having hot cocoa in a big thermos, while we drive aroung (now that the gas prices are down!) looking at everyone's decorations.

We have 3 dates picked for our local shelter to help out.

We are playing tag with our extended neighbors with the "You've been hit by the Holiday Spirit!", and leaving a small batch of cookies...we just ended up with a dozen TollHouse cookies from someone!

We are going OUT OF THE HOUSE TO SEE OUR NEIGHBORS!  Just to talk a little, and connect some more.

We have already offered up "I O U's" to family and neighbors, with the promise to do odd jobs and pick-up/deliver on each other's schedules.

All of these things cost so little, but make a big difference for people.  What else do you guys like to do?

GIFT CARDS IS MY KINDA A SHOPPING FOR CHRISTMAS.

Then they can buy what they want or need and not have to spend time in long lines trying to take something back they didn't want or did not like to began with. The best way to mail a present is a gift card.

But Nana always has to get the grand kids something to open.

I give all my neighbors homemade goodies in pretty mason jars. And make special treats for those that can not have sugar.

It also works good for Church members or forgotten nursing home friends.
