Working at home is an excellent option, especially for people who want to stay with their kids, or for whatever reason. But it seems that if you don't have your own business (or something to that effect) then all the other work-at-home options I've come in contact with are scams. So is working at home REALLY an option?

There are MANY work from home options that are very legitimate, but I think a more important question is: Are you wanting employment that allows you to work from home, or are you wanting and opportunity that with hard work and discipline let's you work from home?

To me those are two very different things. Once you know the answer to that, then you will be able to weed out reality from a scam.

Thanks for your posts. I'm not looking to get rich quick. Heck, I'm not looking to get rich at all (although it would be nice lol). I was just thinking that a job with steady payment that I could do at home would be ideal. Like I said, a lot are scams so I think I've pretty much given up on the idea. However, if one came along....

I did some research on this before deciding to do my own thing.  There are a lot out there which don't tell you much until you sign up and pay up.  Then you find out the truth of it.  I would avoid any of those.

Medical transcription is big if you can find an organization that will train you.  I found one and almost signed up after doing their qualifying test to see if I would be accepted.  You can also check ads who include telecommuting - Craigslist has that option in the search.  Google the company before you accept anything and make sure you don't find any issues out there.  There are some websites that support Work At Home like WAHM and Entrepreneur.com.

I think the bigger question is what are you good at and can you do it from home or will you be trying something new?  If trying something new you need to look into training and education for it.  Question two is can you market yourself and the skill and if you can is your skill in demand enough to sustain your lifestyle?  Three would be, should I try it on my own or continue to look for an employer?

I know what you mean about the scams....

I signed as an AVON Representative a couple of months ago ($10.00 investment) and already have generated several hundred dollars of part-time income per month.  The initial investment included all of my supplies for a month, a website and business cards.

Even in this economy, women will still buy cosmetics and skin care or items for their family.

Hi,

I have multiply businesses - I do various direct sales-

Cookie Lee Jewelry

Tupperware

I chose these companies because I love the products and I've met a lot of great people.  There is a lot of potential to make money depending on how much you put in to it.  I researched each company and talked to other consultants before I signed up.

I also started my own company as a Virtual Assistant.  Many companies are downsizing or small businesses can't afford to hire someone on in a full-time position.  I met a financial advisor who wants help planning events every few months.  Another lady wants help creating flyers for her website to advertise her art gallery.

VAs are becoming very popular.  I have my own laptop and cel phone.  You can go to http://www.myfax.com and get your own fax number for $10 a month.  My printer is also a scanner so I can scan in my documents, then fax them out.  My incoming faxes go to my email, you don't even need an actual fax machine.  You can get low cost business cards at VistaPrint.

I've learned from trial and error.  I've also met a lot of great women along the way who have given me a lot of good advice.  There are a lot of companies that are just scams so you have to be careful, especially ones that want money up front.

I agree with Diana, think about what  you like to do and find out if you can make money at it.  There are a lot of good opportunites out there, you just have to think outside of the box and do the research.

Hello:

It's very difficult to sort information in internet couse it's easy to make a web page that gets your atention (i'm a designer), so i'll recomend you to consider companies that actually have recognition and a phisical address.

I'm a designer, but 3 years ago I was  26 punds over weight and a friend of mine told me about Herbalife which is a nutrition company. I started on the product and lost that weight in three months. He ofered me the business oportunity and I started, but  I wasn't convinced because here in my country Colombia, we are very aware of OPORTUNITY business that offer miracles... but I started any way. It's been 3 years and my life has changed totaly. I closed my design business and I now work from home, got a very good income, and free time with my family. It wasn't  over night, it has been hard work.... but has been worth. Normaly you can make from 500 to 1000 part time when you start.

Herbalife has been around since 1980, we are in 70 countries and we have a scientist developing our products who won a nobel price in medicine. If you want to see a strong company you have to see us... then you can make up your mind. You can see our web http://www.herbalife.com/ and some more pictures... contact me in facebook karinaortegaburbano@gmail.com, msn karinaortega@hotmail.com

I hope you get the idea... my english is not so good!!!

Hi, I work full-time as an engineer, but am looking to have added flexibility in the future.  I started with WorldVentures, and found their training programs to be excellent, as well as the products to be very sellable.  Basically I have my own travel website that gives the customers the benefit of having personal support.

Hi there Im Anna.

I have many things going on at one time- since ur source of income can come in from many ways not just one!

I am a into a new energy drink that is launching on facebook very soon.  Its about buying in like a share holder accept the product there is ur investment in the company.  Your goal is to get others under you like a chain, the matrix will then begin and once you have ur 3 ppl under you- ur personal monthly product is paid for monthly!

You then help those under you obtain there 3 via seminars the company does for and with you- we all win because we are all linked together!

Now some get it n some dont- so I try to make my analogies easy.  Think along the line as I call u, u and I both have call waiting.  We both call and add someone on the line to chat and now we have built a link they have call waiting and theres even more-pretty soon we have a full blown chat line going!

If ud like to see the product- www.enfusionenergyclub.com and whatever you dont know or are not clear or sure of Im here for u 775-910-2540 or just simply email me and Ill contact you.  I know this works, Ive seen other products clear the roof if u can understand the concept and can be part of the dream.  Its a great way to market a new company and get support.  Your take is under your 3, ur paid monthly product plus 5 bucks per person under you.  heres a rough idea

you have 14 ppl under you

14x5=70 xur 3=210 a month you bring in.  This is a direct monthly once a month deposit and the numbers constantly change for the better because we are all obtaining more results!

I think u need to understand that any business is going to be hard work but the reward is it paying and making u money not u chasing the money!

Some get it some wont- but I sure hope you do- and would love to add u on my team!

Thanks,

Anna Corral

Hi I'm Gardentigeress

I have tried many different work at home concepts until I finally realised that what I wanted was my own business.  I had to find what I was good at and that led me to several businesses that I run online.  I have an online store at http://www.gardentigeress.ecrater.com where I sell a product line of home and garden products like gazing ball statues of flamingoes, eagles or cranes, stepping stones, chimes, ect.  I also have another website concerning grandparents rights at http://www.iowagrandparentsrights.com and an online store for dragon statues and anything dragon at http://www.gothicdragons.zetastores.com  and I am an author of a crime novel and recently released a cookbook and have an authors website at http://www.authorsden.com/dvmurphy .  I use createspace and amazon to create my books at a price that makes my books affordable to the public and cuts out the middle man from sticking his hand in my pockets and I earn more for my work without having a huge investment.  My cookbook "The Budget Gourmet" has 184 recipes in it with a tip section of ingredient substitutions and stocking your pantry that I can actually sell for $9.95 without having to have a agent or putting up money upfront before it is printed.  The Budget Gourmet by Denise Murphy is available at http://www.createspace.com/3364981 or through amazon for $9.95 plus $3.95 shipping and handling.

I've been checking out some things, and mostly it's people wanting you to give them money for something (and that's how they make their money). A couple of them sounded legitimate enough, but I didn't have the money to invest, so had to pass it up. I've been looking for something to supplement my Virtual Bookkeeping/Assistant business until I can get more clientele, and that's my dream business.

One of the replies before mine mentioned something, that is very true...find the one (or a few things) that you are very good at, and use that as a springboard to get a business started.

Another thing, that I remember my Intro to Business Instructor taught me, and I've never forgotten it...find a need and find a way to meet that need.

There are many small businesses, and home based businesses, those are my target clientele.  They aren't bookkeepers, and it takes them a long time to get the bookkeeping done, which takes away from other things that they can be doing to build their business or spend time with the families that they are working from home to be near (kinda of defeats the purpose). Same goes for everyday Administrative chores. I charge a start up fee (because I have to set up each business individually), charge a minimum of 2 hours a month...no contracts. Everything is either faxed. scanned and emailed or mailed to me.

All originals are either retained by the client or by me, their option, but computer copies are always on hand for both the client and myself. I don't charge if I get up to get a cup of coffee, use the restroom, stop to take care of my granddaughter's needs, talking on the phone...only the time I actually work. I've learned about non-profit in doing the bookkeeping for a ministry in New Jersey, (I'm in VA).

The biggest obstacles are advertising (and this can be very expensive, so networking is the best option if you have no cash to start up),

getting your family to understand that you are working, and if you don't work you aren't going to get paid, getting what you need together on a shoestring purse and budget.

All of these things take time, patience and self discipline.

The pay off is great once you get it off the ground.

Sometimes, though not very often, it really does pay off to check something that comes into your junk folder (or spam folder). I hit the jackpot with one this morning. Didn't cost me a penny (that was the huge surprise)!

Having said that, IF you got something in your spam or junk that says "Beta Test This Work at Home Program at no cost." in the subject line, from "Work At Home Group", email address is from contact@recessionproofincome.net, OPEN it.

I'm not trying to plug the company, (though if they ever get or already have an affliate program, I'm definitely signing up). But it really is free. No credit card information is asked for and everything is legitimate.

If you really are interested in getting into Internet Marketing, this email contains a valid link for a Beta test program that they are getting ready to market, that is a detailed, easy to understand, education program. They don't just give you a bunch of information, they walk you through it.

I can't post the link here, because I'm not sure how they are marketing it, but if it's in your inbox (or junk/spam folder), it's a MUST OPEN.

The only thing they want you to do is comment on the Beta Program. That really is it (if it wasn't, you wouldn't have heard a thing from me about it, as I'm very carefully about what I talk about).

When the Beta test is over the current projected price is going to be about $200.

So the answer to the original forum question, "Yes there are honest work-at-home opportunities", besides the ones mentioned previoiusly, including by me.

Oh, should also mention, it's not a get rich quick scheme that they are selling, the execution of the program does take some time and effort, and they say that repeatedly, but they tell you how to do it successfully.

Some of the comments have been really short, a few long (like mine), a few snippy, mostly they've been nice with constructive criticism and suggestions. My comment follows:

"T Counce says:

April 26, 2009 at 12:10 pm

First, thank you for this opportunity, it was an answer to a prayer that has been lifted up daily for the last two months.

I am an extensive note taker, especially if I am not sure if I can get back into something or not, and I filled up over half of a 5 x 8 note pad, as I was able to recognize one-third of the way into the first module, when you said take notes, you really weren’t kidding.

I’m familiar with the net, and not realizing it until this course, I’m actually familiar with the advertising concepts, and I already belong to at least one forum that I’ve been under utilizing (until I finish this comment). I learned a great deal of useable information, including specific information to help me with Internet Marketing, not just of other people’s products but my own Service Based Business as well.

I already have a website, (currently not functioning properly, also going to get that resolved in the next couple of days). Having been called home for a family emergency and only $1.18 in my bank account, I didn’t set up a web page through the company listed in the tutorial. The great thing is that I can still apply the principles taught here, after the fact (part of the reason I take such extensive notes). I know I missed out on the “hands on” training, but the visuals in my memory combined with my notes will help me walk through the steps on my own page (and my web host has it’s own affiliate program, so there’s my first affiliate).

I thought, too, that perhaps my computer was the reason for the sound issues in the 3rd Step, but from reading the other comments, I would say that is not the case. There are a few seconds that are just blanked out or the volume goes way down to barely audible, scattered throughout all of Steps 3, 3-1 and 3-2. I think it was 3-1 where the volume varies greatly. It starts out fine, then goes down to the speaker sounding like they are in the bathroom, then back again, then suddenly very very hard to hear, which makes hearing the important information difficult to hear even with boosted speakers and a headset over a yelling three year old (granddaughter hates it when her mother tells her “no”.)

I’m very big on word of mouth (or blog) advertising, and you will definitely get referrals from me, if you have an affiliate program, I am definitely interested (I do better with products I believe in).

Lastly, I too, found the link for your program in my spam folder, and the wording of the subject line was enough for me to ask “what is this?”. I copied the link into a separate browser window, fully expecting to have to shut it down due to the only having the $1.18 in my bank account. A lot of the stuff I get looks like it’s worth while, but that $1.18 just isn’t enough, so an immediate click on the close window box, and it’s gone. When I said this was an answer to my prayers, I really meant it. Thank you, and God Bless you and your endeavor."

Hi,

Sorry to hear that you had bad experiences with spam. However, there really are great work-from-home opportunities out there. Let me share one of them with you and provide links to news and videos so that you can be certain this opportunity is not spam: Dove Chocolate Discoveries’ chocolate tasting parties would be a great idea if you are looking for a way to make some extra money but still have time to spend with family. With this delicious and lucrative business, every chocolate-lover can become a Chocolatier. The starter kits are only $99 (limited offer, normally $149)  and include training, equipment and product needed to hold four to six chocolate tasting parties. Absolutely no professional cooking/baking experience is required! How much or how little you work is up to you – you set your schedule, plan your parties and determine your total hours. Go to www.dovechocolatediscoveries.com to learn more about this unique business opportunity.
If you want to read some success stories, here is an article about a successful Dove Chocolate Discoveries Chocolatier, published in New York Post last week: http://www.nypost.com/seven/04212009/entertainment/home_shopping_network_165493.htm. Similarly, you can go to youtube and type in Dove Chocolate Discoveries and watch some Chocolatiers share their stories.
I hope this helps.
All the best,
Kelly,

The hard part is separating the garbage to the legitamate opportunities.  There is so much misleading information out there about work at home.  Most scams want you to send money so they can send you information on how you can get started on working at home.  You should not have to pay for information.  The other misleading part is work at home jobs....they are so far and few unless your a blogger or freelance writer.   So many search for a jobs online, you need to ask yourself...do employers go to the internet looking for employees?   This is not to say they are NO legit jobs on the net, but you need to be clear on what your looking for and do the reseach on the company when you find them.  The internet for the most part is aTOOL, a RESOURCE that one can utilize to grow, promote and advertise thier business.  Someone brought up a good point in one of the other threads, are you looking to get paid by the hour or are you looking to work hard so you can decide where you want your life to be personally and financially.  A job is where your working for someone else and making their dreams come true not yours.   Your just putting in your time to help them get to be where they want.   And remember, jobs aren't secure....now having your own home business means the only way you get fired is if you quit working your business.   Just remember that if your interested in a home based business that it's with a company and team you trust and believe in what your standing behind and promoting.  At the end of they day you want to feel good about what you do and why your doing it.   Your why is the one thing that can motivate you to never giving up.

First I would like to say thank you to everyone who posted on this topic.   This is a subject I have been considering since I lost my job in March due to "economic down turn" after 20+ years in the same industry .  I live in Michigan and we have a 14% unemployment rate so there is a lot of competition for the jobs that are available.  The information posted has been very helpful to me and I am now in the process of researching the companies and opportunities available.  I also will be considering the discipline it will take to work while I am at home and the ways I would need to keep my work separate from my home life.  It does help that I have a separate office in my house.

Again Thank You to everyone who posted information.

I was going to take an at home travel agent job with Easy Escapes Travel, however, I got offered a travel agent position with an agency.  I have heard good things about this company and all their agents work from home.  The only downside I saw was that it is strictly commission based and you don't get paid for the vacations you have booked for clients until 3-6 months after they have travelled.  This would be great for a part time home position for the first year then leading on to full time.

First, let me apologize for my long absence from the forum and the network...I have been SOOOO busy working on this very subject.

I am down to one client, and I really needed to get my business a kick in the pants, so to speak, since the one client has consistently been VERY late in paying me. It's an evangelistic ministry, and they are feeling the economic downturn as well.  I had to let my websites go, both my personal (was suppose to be business, but I couldn't get it to publish) and my ministry...which is ok as God has had me going in different directions as of late.

But I really needed to get my home based business from offline to online...and that course that I talked about in my last post in this topic really got me to thinking...not how to get involved in the affliate programs, but how to market my own business...and I'm taking what I'm learning and passing it onto my client, hoping he will take the information and put it to good use.

With the closing of my web page, (which was a good thing in the long run since the name didn't really work for what I was trying to do with it), I had to find another way to get my virtual bookkeeping/administrative assistant business from offline to online.

There are upsides and down sides

One upside, I was able to find a slew of free web hosts

    The downsides to this are

  1. I know little to nothing about css, html and bb codes

  2. I can't always get the visual editor to do what I want

  3. Because it's a website on someone elses host (known as a subdomain)

  • it's not registered with WHOIS as my site

  • it's not a .com (etc.) site

  • I have to follow their rules (like no .php which means I can't use WordPress)

  • Until I learn css coding I am stuck with their templates, not that they are bad, but so far the feed back is that it's too generic

Another upside Advertising costs are at zero...so far and I'm getting a slew of information for free

     The downsides to this are

  1. It's slow going

  2. There's so much to learn that I got in information overload

And yet another upside is I've found some other ways to generate income.

I have to go back and read the Excellecom TOS before I start sharing this information...(and that of the other sites I'm affliated with), but I am anxious to share what I have learned through this process, to help anyone else that is looking to starting or growing a business. Some things will be free, at some point I'm going to charge a fee...maybe...I'm really excited about what's coming in this new adventure I've embarked on.

Most of the pop up ads that you see when perusing various job sites are scams. These are the ones where, when you click on them, it just provides a bunch of testimonials but no details regarding what the job is. They will usually ask you for money in order to receive their money making advice. Oftentimes they are multi-level marketing schemes by which you make money by recruiting others to join.

There are legitimate home-based opportunities but you have to apply for them just like you would a regular job. For example, if you have technical skills, some software companies will allow you to work as a help desk rep from home. Likewise, some companies will allow you to do sales from home.

Another option would be to start your own business which you would run from your home such as bookkeeping, childcare, financial planning, web design, tax preparation, etc. For these jobs you would need to have the proper education, licenses and credentials. As with any business, however, at least PART of the time you will have to get out to market it at least until you get it up and running and have developed a solid system of customer referrals for generating new business.

Anyone interested in a legitimate home business, go to the following website and watch the presentation. It's 30 minutes long and is worth every minute. My husband and I have been in this business for 4 months and are making a very good income. So good, that I was able to leave my job within 3 months. He and I do this business full time now and we love it. There is no boss, no inventory and no selling. Sound amazing? It is! If you like what you see, contact me at 951-294-7983 and I will help you get started.

This topic comes up a lot, so I hope this helps anyone looking for legitimate at-home positions. Short of starting a business, there are some legitimate customer service type work where you can set your own hours.  Some require a little start up fee, some do not.

1.  West-At-Home (www.westathome.com).  West hires home-based customer service agents.  You can go to the website to check out more information.  It takes a while to get started, but they'll let you know if and when they are hiring in your area.  Basically, all you need in a headphone, a land line phone and internet access (broadband or DSL).  When they are ready to hire, you'll have to pass their training on the computer within a specific time frame. If you don't pass, you'd have to wait at least 6 months before trying again.

2. WorkForce Logic evaluating Google ads.  The pay on this is $15/hr and you can only work up to 30 hours a week.  and I don't know if they are still hiring in this area.  Go to www.google.com, about google, jobs at google (under Our Company), US locations, multiple locations, Engineering, testing.  You'll see positions for Ad Quality Rater and Quality Rater.

3.  Here are some other companies that only hire at home workers:  Alpine Access, Convergys, Extended Presence, Internet Girl Friday, LiveOps, Spheris, Staffcentrix, VIP Desk and Voicelog.  Don't have specific email address for these but the majority of them require some type of start up fee and the addition of additional equipment.

4. Also here's a website that lists various at-home opportunites.  Again, you'd have to search through these to determine if they are of any interest to you.  www.ratracerebellion.com/CS_Cmparison.html.

I am sure that anyone that really wants to work can find something that he can do and get paid for. There are many businesses that allow people to work from home, especially in the IT domain but not only. I used to work for a  memory foam mattresses producer that needed manually sewed patterns on it's products and I made a pretty good living out of it.
