Hi everyone!  I work full-time as a hospice chaplain, but writing has been a long-time hobby of mine.  I am starting to think about trying to explore writing for side income, and was wondering how to begin going about that.  I would love to hear from others who write professionally or semi-professionally (i.e. have ever been paid a dime for it).  Thanks!

My career started as a journalist, and throughout the decades has always gravitated to writing of some kind.  I there is a lot of opportunity for freelance writers, but it's also not a get rich quick profession.

Have you looked into listing yourself as a writer on www.elance.com and bidding on projects offered there?

I bought a computer in Feb of 2008, and by the end of that year made $22,000 freelance writing.  I am in the top 1.5 % of freelance writers on Elance.com; am a channel steward at Helium.com, a premier writer at Demand Studios, and have several other writing venues as well. I'm on track for well over $30K this year, and for opening my own firm in 2010.

Definitely check out several different sites and play the field a little. Suite 101 is good; like Helium and Associated Content, they pay ad revenue for articles posted on their site. Those are all good places to get your feet wet and learn some more about writing - Helium has a very supportive environment, and I received such great input there when starting out!

You can always tag me for more info. I mentor a lot of beginning freelancers now, and am always happy to talk.
