Hello, my name is Nicole. I'm writing today to ask a very simple question. Why is it 16yr olds are less likley to get a job even if they are great at what they are applying for. why is it the employers still dont give the job to them? Is this not a form of discriminetion? I just would like some feed back on this because I see it as unfair to the people who are applying to jobs but are of the ages 16-18.

your responce is much appriciated!

What type of position are you applying for? It may be a legal reason you are not hired for a job. In my state an 18 yr old can serve alcoholic drinks- but cannot work behind the bar. Anyone younger than 18 cannot do other certain jobs in restaurants. I know you have to be at least 18 to work in gas stations (or anyplace selling tobacco products). And people under 18 are not legally allowed to work certain hours. So, it actually could be a legal issue as to why you were not hired.

Or, you could be the reason you were not hired for a job- regardless of if you think you are great at it. It could be the way you presented yourself in the interview. It could be the hours you are available vs. what the employer needs. Or it could be that the customers of a business expect an older person- for example I will not get financial advise from an 18 yr old, or buy a house or a car. I want someone with more experience when purchasing those items.

Or the reason you were not hired may not have had anything to do with your age but other reasons. Reasons we could all be passed over for a position we thought we were perfect for. It could be that there was a more qualified candidate. It could be that we were not the right fit in the company. It could be the employer was just advertising the position but already had filled it.

The employer’s decision to hire a qualified candidate of a certain age (whether younger or older) is also based on the employer’s positive or negative relationships with people in that age group. For example, if a qualified 18-year-old candidate reminds the employer of a favorite niece, then the employer is more likely to hire the 18-year-old candidate, based on the employer’s positive relationship with the niece. On the other hand, if another qualified 18-year-old candidate reminds the employer of an obnoxious next-door neighbor, then the employer is less likely to hire the 18-year-old candidate, based on the employer’s negative relationship with the neighbor.
