How many of you fine ladies run your own business? I was thinking about starting a group for those of us that would much rather be our own bosses than report to others. If you don't currently run your own business, but wish you could, this could be a great group to share ideas and trade tips on getting it going.

I have my own legal practice, and I am a real estate investor; I prefer being my own boss when it comes to earning money.  On the other hand, I do volunteer work, for which I report to others, which is also fine.

I am a freelance writer and also do financial consulting work as a contractor. I am always interested in learning more about how to improve my business opportunities, prospecting, etc. Plus, it's always nice to bounce ideas off of others.

Awesome! How long have you been freelancing? I had my own writing/editing/project management firm for about four years, and occasionally pick up freelance work when the project right. Do you mostly rely on internet postings for new clients, or do you typically use your network to add to your portfolio?

I started freelancing in 2008 just for fun. This year I got more serious about it. I get my leads, believe it or not, from regular old job boards like Monster and Careerbuilder. A lot of companies are looking for part-time short-term assignments on a contract basis.

I have looked at sites like sologig and freelancewriting.com but have never gotten a job through those. Recently I got my first assignment through a linkedin contact. That one will probably turn into future assignments.

Even if I get a permanent full-time job as a writer, I will probably continue to freelance on the side simply because I enjoy it. Plus the only way to stay fresh with your writing is to keep doing it for a variety of outlets.

I would love to network with other women with an interest in running their own business. I previously had a business and am preparing to start a new one currently. One of the networks that I just found is http://smallbizlink.monster.com/ It doesn't focus on women exclusively but has some good info on it.
