Hello All,


Does anyone here have any type of criminal history?


No, I have no felonies, but have one misdemeanor for a DUI on my public record. I also have a domestic charge on my record which I have had expunged so it is no longet visible to employers.


I have been told that both of these charges are quite common. I was wondering if anyone has similar charges, and if it has hindered your chances of getting hired?


In the past, proir to my expungement, the domestic issue did cause some problems. At least in my opinion.


Any feedback would be apprecated :)

I don't have any criminal history but as a hiring manager it does effect your ability to get hired, no matter what anyone says. I go through resumes first and select the one's I like, then I view criminal backgrounds fi provided. And depending on the "incident" and when it happened it may be no big deal. For example if you got a DU 10 years ago when you were 21 I don't care. But if in the last year you were hit with identity theft and you want to work in the accounting dept. it ain't gonna happen.


I would definitley be up front about the DUI but again depending on how long ago it was may not effect your job hunt.

The DUI was in 2005.


I also have one arrest in which I was not conviced and it was dismissed, but I am quite confident the arrest in on my public record.


To be blunt,  this all scares the hell out of me. It was all a while back and I made some bad choices. I know I need to be upfront about the DUI, I always have been. Luckely now I am in a company which is small and did not run any background checks.


I hope that it has not fully ruined my future opportunities in my career field. I have since graduated college and maintained a steady position in an highly recognized organization.

I can comment as someone who regularly screens resumes and participates in hiring, if it'll help. Everyone makes mistakes in their life. As long as a candidate is forthcoming with situations like the one you've described, it wouldn't affect my perception of their work history/interview at all. However, if someone has a record of violence or theft-related crimes, I would not accept their application.

I think it's important and perfectly acceptable these days to run a background check on anyone you are thinking about dating seriously. The one I've used is Sentry Link, it's $20.00 and gives you a fairly thorough report, but there may be better ones.
