Hi =} Not too sure how to start, but here goes;

I'm finishing my last year in high school right now, and very . . . concerned about the future. I currently work at Subway, nothing too exciting right? But for now it's a job. Right now I'm thinking I want to get into maybe Business Management, or maybe something at a bank. I just don't know how to go about that. Any advice?

Please and thank you =} I appreciate any input on what I should do.

Well you already have a leg up since you are already on this site at a young age! We always talk about networking on this site, have you done that ? Have you spoken to your parents or friends of your parents to see what opportunities may be out there ? I would also suggest working part-time at a bank or place of employment you might enjoy to see if it is something you really like. If so, most companies offer tuition reimbursment- they pay for you to go to college- there are catches though, so read up. But I think that would be a good start.

Great advice, Lizz. Just another quick suggestion: when you start your college path, consider doing community college for your general education, then transfering to a great 4-year school. Many of the most prestigious colleges are more likely to take a transfer student than a freshman,  and you'll leave college with WAY less debt from your education that way.

Thank you guys for the advice =}

I've talked to my dad about it a bit, he is kinda out of the loop with all the college stuff though. I'm guessing my next best bet is to talk to a counsellor at my school. I've already been accepted at the Art Institute of Phoenix, though now I'm not sure I want to go there.

My dad kind of talked me out of it, see I'd thought I wanted to go there for video game design. The more I think about it, the more I realize that I like drawing for fun, not assignments. Not only am I still iffy about if I want to go there, the program itself is a 3 year program where I'd get my bachelors degree which costs $60,000. Just not something I'm sure I'm ready for; even with scholarships, grants, and loans.

My dad thinks the gaming industry is only going to go down, and chances of me having a good job would be low. Where as going for something in business management,  you would have a wider variety.

Ever since freshman year I've been asking myself what I really want to do, and as I get closer and closer to that graduation date, I get more freaked out by the day.

In addition to the terrific advice in the last two posts, you might also try taking one or more career aptitude tests. These are tests that reveal your strengths and weaknesses as well as your interests and then suggest possible career fields for you to try. There are numerous free tests on the web; all the major career sites will have them -- monster.com, careerbuilder.com, hotjobs.com. Or you could type in "career assessment test" into your web browser. Your school counselor might have access to one as well.

Here is one based on the Myers-Briggs test that I found to be useful:  http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp

In addition to showing you possible career paths to investigate, the test results also give you great answers to some typical job interview questions, such as "what are your key strengths? what is your ideal job? etc."

And by the way, I think the fact that you're still in high school and holding down a job at Subway is great! You are obviously a responsible person with drive and ambition. The skills you learn at Subway will be skills that you will use throughout your career: customer, service, money handling, time management, sales. Good for you!

Kudos on recognizing that you like to draw for fun, not work. It takes most creative people YEARS to figure out that they aren't really suited to make a career out of their creative passions. You are mature beyond your years.

Though, if you were interested in working in video games in a capacity other than art, I might have some advice for ya. I have a ton of friends in that field.

I will say this you are very wise for your age. Most 18 year old senior's aren't thinking about the cost of college and big high five to "jforbes", she is right on. Take your general ed classes
@ community and then transfer, it is waaaay cheaper. Take your time and think about it, most seniors don't know what they want to do when they "grow up". Have you thought about animation, or working for a studio (Fox Studios). Either way I think you'll do great !
