Language Majors in the Career World

Posted 23 days ago Currently, I'm a college student, and in this economy, I'm starting to fear graduation. Mostly, because I'm a language major, and I keep getting the message that I'm not going to be marketable come time to join the real world. What language am I pursuing? Japanese. See, that's the problem. If it was Chinese, I might have a better chance, but I LIKE Japanese, and I really want to become fluent and utilize it in my future career. Now, I'm also majoring in Communication, so I'm not completely hopeless, but I don't want to graduate and end up never using my language major. I'm working very hard to learn this language. I don't want my time and effort to be for nothing in the end. I've been considering translation, but I'm not completely sure yet. I know there must be jobs out there that are looking for people with an interest and education in Japan. The problem is finding them! If anyone has any advice on where to go and what to do from here, I'd appreciate it greatly.

Posted 23 days ago Did you know that the NBA & WNBA have offices and jobs in china/Japan ?? I was looking for a job of course and they needed someone for a financial manager, receivalbes manager and one other position but you had to speak the language. I don't ! There are a lot of companies that operate or have ties over seas. Another example is APL, Hanjin, China Shipping, Maersk, etc all of these companies ship products from over seas to the US and have office in both their homeland and the US and again, you gotta speak the language. Definitely look at broadening your horizon. There are a lot of jobs out there that require another language, that you might not expect ! Good luck on your search.

Posted 21 days ago Random question: do you like Manga and Anime? I ask only because I know that the translation of both these forms of entertainment is a very sustainable and lucrative profession. Companies like Viz and TokyoPop make a ton of money bringing these Japanese comic forms to the U.S. and are in regular need of good translators. Other companies based in Japan or with roots there, like Nintendo and Sony, likely have localization opportunities as well.

Posted 20 days ago I like some anime, but I don't really read any manga. I never thought about Nintendo or Sony though. Good ideas! Thanks a lot! You guys are really helping me think outside the box. I'll have to look into Nintendo and Sony. (only because I DO play video games! XD)
