OK..so my boss (VP of Operations) retired in June of this year. He had an excutive assistant..(NY) and then me..but she managed his day to day, I on the other hand managed the local office..provided admin duties when needed. There have been lots of layoffs in the last two years, but I have been unaffected so far. When my boss retired, they let his assistant go the same day, but kept me. Mind you I had already begun inserting myself into other  parts of the business for support. Since he has gone, I have a new manager. They even even  gone so far as to purchse me a new computer, etc since my boss has gone. I haven't heard any rumors about cuts, but can't help but wonder why my boss's boss will be in our office next week.

What gives?

You can speculate all you want, but I'm not sure doing so is in any way beneficial. I was laid off about a year ago and had no idea it was coming. It took me completely by surprise. And when it happened, I had wished I'd had some warning. But in hindsight, I'm glad I didn't. Had I known about it, I would have just worried myself sick and wouldn't have been able to concentrate on my job.

You say you've taken on new responsibilities and been given a new computer. This tells me that you're valuable to your company at this time, especially as they are understaffed. If I were you I wouldn't worry about it. Your boss's boss may just be coming around to observe the new manager, make sure things are going smoothly post-layoff or just to check in.

But I would keep my resume up to date and always be open to new opportunities, because you just never know when you'll need to move on.

Is it a publicly traded company? If so, listen to your company's most recently quarterly earnings announcement or read the transcript. Management will comment on how the business did that quarter and oftentimes they will provide forward guidance for how they think the company will perform in the next quarter or year and whether or not they are planning a layoff.

But I agree with TaniaK: worrying about it isn't going to change anything. Just keep your nose to the grindstone, keep your ears open and do what you can to make yourself needed. At the same time, make sure you have a cash reserve set aside that covers 6 months living expenses, and don't run up any debt. Better safe than sorry!

I agree don't stress yourself about it too much. Make sure you have some money set aside just in case. Having a savings in place is NEVER a bad thing. Also, no matter what make sure you update your resume every year to keep it fresh. Also, just keep working. If you worry yourself to hard, you may worry yourself out of a job.
Keep working and stay positive.
