I hav an Associates degree in Accounting and have been bookkeeping for sometime now. Am thinking of going to school again. But the dilemma is that somwhere i have a passion of being a nurse but practically adavncing my accounting education seems a better option. Want your opinion, what should I do?

In this economy, it's hard to argue against becoming a nurse.

The upside of nursing is that there is always a demand for them and you can pretty much get a job any where you want. So it's probably one of the most flexible jobs you will ever come across. The downside is that it is not a glamorous job. You might spend your days wiping up body fluids, seeing people in pain, and having to endure abominable odors and sights.

Conventional wisdom is that you should follow your passion. Envision yourself 10 years from now. In a perfect world, what are you doing for a living? Nursing or accounting? Are you happy?

My advice is to go for the nursing degree if that is truly what you want to do. You can always go back to get your accounting degree later.

I think Lbrewton is right - people will always need nurses. However, make sure you know what you're getting into with nursing - it most certainly is a profession of passion. I have friends who are RNs, and they have some of the wildest swings in highs and lows of their jobs. You are dealing with "customers" who are often times in the most dire straights of their lives, so the job can be very emotionally taxing. You should check out NursingLink.com for more info on where to go from "I want to be a nurse."
