I'm still in high school, but I'm going into my junior year this fall, so I'm thinking of what I want to do with the rest of my life, and where I want to go to college. Ever since I was small, I've always loved computers, so much so that I'd tell my mom to reboot the TV when it broke, haha. But I've also always loved writing and reading, and I even had a teacher almost cry while telling my mom that I have to write when I grow up. And when I got into high school, I started taking French, and I'm in love with that now too. I want to work with computers when I grow up, be a computer programmer most likely, and I am determined to go to MIT if it kills me (and with all these AP classes, it just might). But my mom was telling me how I should keep my options open, and go to a college that is broader in range but doesn't have as great a computer program, like Drexel. Their computer program isn't as good as MIT's, but it's not bad, and if I decide I don't want to work in computers, then I don't have to change colleges just to change majors. I looked up classes in MIT, though, and they have a Writing department, and a World Language department that includes French, which just strengthens my desire to go there.

I'm sure at least someone has gone through this too. What did you do? I'm running out of time to flip-flop with what I want to do.

Mind you, I took a computer programming course at university back in the early 80s, when we were still going from binary to cobal.  But my personal opinion is that a university is a good place for that.  You can go for your degree, which will include such electives as writing and French.  Having a second language will come in handy when you're looking for a position in this global world.  Going to university also gives you the freedom to change majors if you decide that you like another aspect of the field better, or if you find another field altogether, which frequently happens.  The thing about going to a specialized place like MIT is that if you change your mind, alot of money is down the drain.  If you go to a university, you can even relocate during the years that you're getting a degree, and your credits go with you.  Just apply to transfer them to the new university.  If your mother is willing to pay for college, or has a way for you to be able to go, I would look at that as a fine opportunity.  I really enjoyed my time at university.

If you were my daughter I would suggest that you major in computers with a minor in writing.  This way you'll have a a carreer you'll enjoy, and one that will pay the bills.   The great thing about writing is that you can do it anytime, anywhere.   You can work on projects in your off time, this will help you determine where your true passion lies.

Hi there!  Congrats on getting your future together!!  I always suggest that a student in your situation start out at a local junior or community college for two years, then transfer your credits to a four year university for your bachelor degree.  This way, you can save some money while figuring out ALL of your options.  Sometimes we get out there & change our minds once we see everything available.  It can be VERY overwhelming.  Good luck in your planning & DOING!!!!

I'm glad to know that you are looking ahead toward your future. Computer Programming is a great major at whatever college you decide to attend.  Even if you don't decide to major in writing, you can always take writing classes. You could even major in computer programming and minor in a foreign language. A foreign language would be a great minor no matter which field you ultimately decide to major in.

Good luck, I'm sure you will do fine. Keep us posted.
