Maybe Women in Crisis isn't the right forum for this, but here's my story. A couple of months ago I lost my job as a regional marketing manager for a company I had been with for eight years. Trying to find the positive in it all, I've been telling myself I was too comfortable and it was the kick in the butt I needed to move on to something bigger and better.

Now reality is setting in and as much as I love being home with my daughter I WANT to go back to work. So I've been searching and applying and have had a couple of interviews that didn't turn into anything. I have another interview this Friday and am looking for helpful hints and tips for the interview process. Any advice???

"Prep for the Top 10 Interview questions" is on the excelle home page today... There are lots of news articles here- look under news- then career links. I think that the most important thing you can bring to an interview is CONFIDENCE! Good luck with your job search and interview process....which is a valuable learning experience no matter what!

I hope you had a successful interview, if that did not turn out well do'nt give up. Think positive at least you were called for an interview others were not as fortunate. Give us a feed-back as to how things turn-out.

I understand, TammyA.  I, too, am looking for a job, and it's like insanity out there!  I also get the interviews, but they don't turn into anything.  Here's what I'm doing:  identifying transferrable skills, and writing each resume tailored to the job description.  I'll let you know how this goes.  I also recommend the interview tips - they helped me.  Sonia

As spark95152 mentioned indentify your transferrable skills and tailor your resume to the job description.  Core competancy

resumes work very well.  Hang in there it works.  I was in your shoes about a year and half ago.  I know how frustrating it can be to go

Have you had your resume critiqued?  What about going to a career center for an interviewing workshop?  I did all of these things while

I wish you the very best.  Be persistent looking for a job is a job in itself.

Actually, I think this is a great forum for you to come to to gain support.  After all, not having a job is a crisis, isn't it?  Sometimes we tend to minimize what is happening to us in our lives, which can be just as bad as exaggerating our problems to ourselves, because it prevents us from getting the support that we need and deserve.  So, I hope that you will keep coming here and letting us know how it's going, even if it isn't always good.

I'm also looking for a new job.  The company my husband worked for relocated us from New Jersey in 2004 to Charleston, SC.  He was just fired a couple of months ago.  Where I work presently is only 6 hours a week.  We only have one care and here you really have to drive to get around; however, there is a bus system that I'm starting to learn about.  South Carolina isn't like New Jersey where you can get a bus to go pretty much wherever you want.  I'm not complaining, it's very beautiful and friendly.  Wherever God leads that's all I can say.

Hang in there and do not leave any stone unturned.  It took me 4 1/2 months to land something.  I am happy to say that if my background check goes fine (which is should) I'll start work this Wednesday.  It's for a lot less than I was making as a manager but compared to making zero...

Get on all the job related search engines you can.  I have jobs sent to my email everyday from Yahoo/Hotjobs, Careerbuilder, Monster.com and the local newspaper has a search engine that will let you sign up for email notificatons.

There are also other web pages like Women.Co that you can go to and search their job database.  I did that everyday too.  And let us not forget the tried and true (where I saw the ad for my new job) the Sunday classifieds in our local newspaper.

Customizing your resume and cover letter is also something I did as well and recommend.  I went to a class on finding a job (believe it or not they have them) and another thing they told us was look closely at the job description.  Make sure you use their "Buzz" words in your resume and cover letter.  You can be instantly disqualified as someone just glances at your paperwork and does not see these buzz words.  For example, if the job description says "mulitple phone lines", make sure you put that exact description in your paperwork and even elaborate on it as to when, where etc.

Hope all this advice from everyone here helps.

Cindy

I have been out of work since May.. I love to spend time with my two children but I WANT to go back to work too.  I miss it.

I miss the feeling of being able to contribute to the household and so forth.  I went on several interviews and to no avail.

Good luck..  I will pray you find something too.

Best of luck....

Tammy, I think you should not give up - once the right time comes and the right job appears, you will certainly get it. At the time being you caould enjoy your free time for maximum, as one day you'll definitely start working again and won't be able to do things so easy to realize now: time with your daughter,  no rush and good sleep in the morning,  shops cruising, fitness etc

Thanks everybody for the great feedback. I did start a new job in Mid-November. It's not full time and it's not marketing, which is my passion. However, it is a job and with great benefits. I did just recently have another opportunity present itself and should find out soon how it will turn out. It is marketing and it is full time for a company/industry that  I am very familiar with. I will let you all know soon what happens.

I can relate wholeheartedly to the struggles of trying to find a job. I work part-time in daycare and also doing in home care. Let me briefly tell my story. There have been many struggles but without the support of my husband and children, and my faith in God I couldn't have accomplished any of this. There have been health isssueswhich in some ways stalled my dreams. I 've worked different jobs throughout the years (paid and volunteer), and have been a stay at home mom. Some you reading this may be thinking so what? Stay with me a little bit longer. I'm not after brownie points I just want to let you have to believe in yourself when all else seems hopeless.
Fall of 2000 when our oldest son went off to college I decided it was time for me to pursue some career choices for myself. I enrolled in classes at a community college and continued to work part-time. At first my husband thought I had gone off my rocker, but then he acceptd my decision and said go for it. Besides being a nontraditional student and feeling like a fish out of water at first there were days I was in excruitiating pain and having seizures. I gave up my job once again. That summer while I was recovering my parents needed some help(My dad was diagnosed with early stage Altzheimers My mom was trying to care for him on her own and it was taking a toll on her health so my family made numerous trips to my parents 200 miles away) By fall my dad was brought up to this area when my mom was hospitalized. Having training as a nursing assistant I had worked with AD patients. In the evenings I was going out to where my dad was staying to bathe him, and try to get him to walk. My colle course load was dropped to the bare mininum during that semester (just enough to qualify for a pell grant). With my health problems I had to be careful. it took me a littlle bit longer but May of 2003 I proudly walked up to accept my diploma. Yeah baby! I earned my associates degree with a lot of hard work and determination to prove to world that I am somebody special. My dad passed away before I could thank him for teaching me the valuable lesson about believing in yorself. Since then I've had doors closed when I've applied for certain positions, but I believe the best is yet to come.
