I am a red girl, but I have not always been so. i remember starting off drinking White Zen in college. (after I was 21:) ) I thought I was so cool. Anyway I have graduated to dryer, fuller reds and haven't looked back.

I do not drink very much, but I like wine with dinner a few times per month. I like whites and reds as long as they are not sweet. A mellow Merlot is my favorite red.

I enjoy most of the Chateau St. Jean wines.  I recently found out that they can be ordered direct from the vineyard:  http://www.chateaustjean.com/stjean/catalog/index.jsp.  Unfortunately, they won't ship to Louisiana, however there are several specialty shops that carry them. Their reisling and gerwerstraminer are my favorites.  As far as reds go, I like shiraz.  I don't like fruity wines with the exception of mixing them with a fruit juice for brunch.

Are there many (any) wineries where you live?

I really love the Rieselings, Gewurztraminer, and Moscatos. I have found that they pair very nicely with spicy Thai food...or anyother spicy Asian food.  Here's a good link to some great Gewurztraminer: http://www.wine.com/v6/search/advancedsearchresults.aspx?varietalid=10

Enjoy!

My preference has always been red. My favorite would be cabernet or a good merlot.

I am very lucky, I live next to the Dutchess wine trail and we have three very different vineyards to choose from (dessert wines, white and reds)

I love almost all wines, and I have my stand-bys, but- my new favorite red is the South American Malbec- tons of nuances, berry fruits, vanilla, even coffee at times.  Some have very earthy flavors as well.  More complex than a Merlot, but not as heavy as a Cab.  I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys red!

I haven't acquired a taste for red wines yet, but I love Riesling. I'm not much of a wine guru, but I tend to like white wine.

I'm not much of a wine connoisseur, actually NOT AT ALL!  I'm not much into wine and never really have been.  I do though enjoy a nice  glass of White Zin every now and again.

I am a fan of red, and mostly on the heavier side - Shiraz, Syrah, Cabernet.

Has anyone tried an Oregon Pinot Noir?

I live on the Central Coast of California. Monterey has so many wineries and tasting rooms that are absolutely wonderful. My husband and i are members of one, Taste of Monterey, and we enjoy weekly tastings of their reserve wines as well as late evening entertainment on the last Friday of the month. If you are ever in the area check it out. The room is large and overlooks the Monterey Bay. Have a look at their website and plan a visit  http://www.tastemonterey.com .

After a wine tasting outing a year ago, I fell in love with a particular Italian white: Arneis. But it's impossible to find a decent selection retail, even at Trader Joe's & Whole Foods. Does anyone have any tips? Great retailers that have hard-to-find varietals? Maybe online shops?

Katie J: I LOVE Oregon Pinots! My absolute favorite is from Penner Ash.  It usually runs around $40-60 and is well worth it.

Karina: Malbec is another of my favorites!

I feel like I should go get my wine journal and start listing off wineries and vintages!

I'm so happy to see other Riesling lovers on here - I didn't know there were so many!  I am a HUGE fan of Rieslings.  My favorite is not even a very expensive one - Chateau St. Michele.  I do also like Merlots and occasionally a Shiraz.  However, no matter how "girly" it may seem - I LOVE a sweet wine.

Hmm thanks for the suggestion. I love red wines, especially a good merlot but often find cabarnet just a little to heavy for my taste. I'm definitely going to have to try this!

I'm excited about this forum.  I've always drank Reisling or Merlot.  No money or opportunity to really experiment, and then no knowledge to be brave enough too.  So you ladies have alot to teach me and I will be referreing back here to see what I should try next.

Thanks and cheers.

The best way I've found for experimentation is through wine tasting.   I've learned a ton by visiting a wine/liquor store that offers wine tasting.  An experienced person is usually pouring, so you can ask questions.  The one that I love to visit is free, and you're under no obligation to buy anything.  There's usually a range of wines to try, as well, with whites, reds and a range in prices as well.

HTH! :)

I like this forum.

Usually I prefer red wine Merlo or Caberne but during the summer time I like very much white wine.

My favourite is Sonoma County Reserve Malbec 2001 but you can find it very rarely

Hello fellow wine lovers.  I enjoy white wines that are a little sweet or that have that "oak" flavor.  I also like reds that tend to be "fruity" such as a Malbec.  I love shopping at Trader Joe's because of their wine selection and their reasonable prices.  It makes it more fun to try things your never heard of!

For me the best wines are dry dry dry. I generally prefer reds, but there is the occasional good white that I enjoy as well. For the most part I prefer shiraz or merlots, but I cannot remember ever turning down a good burgundy either.

My initiation into wines was waaaay before I was of legal drinking age, I was introduced to "Bali Hai" wine at the tender age of 16. Looking back, it was a nasty rose' type, very sweet as I remember. The sweetness was no doubt the selling point for me. I do remember that the second time I drank it was at a party, and lordy did I have too much. There is nothing worse than getting sick off of cheap wine. It turned me off wine and anything alcoholic for years. I believe it was probably 15 or so years before I even got up the nerve to try wine again. Thank God I had someone that knew what they were about and was introduced to a lovely chardonney. It was the beginning of a lasting love affair.

It amazes me that I even remember the name of my first wine, and makes me wonder if there is anyone else that even remembers that particular brand? At any rate, it did serve as a good life lesson for me into the "evils" of over indulgence of alcohol, especially at such a tender young age.

Much as I loathe sweet wines, there is one that I do enjoy as a dessert wine. For those who do like sweet wines, try "Eiswein" (Ice Wine). It is sweet balanced with a nice acidity. The two largest producers, and the best, are Germany and Canada.  My favorite is "Inniskillin" it is a canadian produced wine, and a bottle runs around 50 dollars. They are not always easy to find, but well worth the hunt. Enjoy. Lina

I have heard of some ice wines but  haven't tried them.  My daughter used to live in the upper peninsula in Michigan.  They could get some pretty nice ice wines there.  I live with wine country all around me.  I live just up the hill from the Saint Michelle and Columbia wineries.  I didn't really begin to try many wines until I moved into the area (in 1989).  Washington wines have won many awards in recent years.  If you can get them, give one a try.

Cabernet Sauvignon is my absolute favorite followed by certain Chianti wines. I love them best when paired with steak...

I also like a good Cabernet Sauvignon and have really come to love Root 1's Chilean blend. I do enjoy a good Pinot Noir on occasion, however, and Firesteed is one of my favorites in that category.

There are some wonderful  wine available. If you have a specific wine in mind that you can't locate, try   Pardon That Vine  I think you should try this. I recently came across while surfing the net. I am sure you too will find the site very helpful.
